GPT Image 2 vs Nano Banana Pro: price, features and code

OpenAI's GPT Image 2 and Google's Nano Banana Pro are the two image models most often compared for ad creative, product edits and pictures with text. Here is how they differ on price, sizes and inputs, and how to test both with the same request.

The short answer

GPT Image 2 (OpenAI) and Nano Banana Pro (Google) are the two image models most teams shortlist when the picture has to carry readable text, follow a long instruction or edit a real product photo. Both make images from a prompt and edit images you send, both go up to 4K, and on Revana both take the same request body. Where they differ:

  • Price. GPT Image 2 lists $0.03 per image at every size. Nano Banana Pro lists $0.04 per image at every size.
  • Reference images. GPT Image 2 takes up to 16 in one request; Nano Banana Pro takes up to 14.
  • Shapes. GPT Image 2 offers a 5:2 panorama; Nano Banana Pro offers 5:4 and 4:5, the common feed and print shapes.
  • Routes. GPT Image 2 has two routes behind it; Nano Banana Pro has one route.

We do not publish quality scores. Each model has a following for a reason, and the only test that matters is your own prompts. Because the request is identical apart from the model field, running the same ten prompts through both is a few lines of code.

What a batch costs (October 2026)

Both models charge once per image and the same at 1K, 2K and 4K, so the size you ask for does not change the bill. That makes 4K the sensible default whenever you might crop or print later.

GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana Pro batch costs
ImagesGPT Image 2Nano Banana Pro
1$0.03$0.04
100$3.00$4.00
1,000$30.00$40.00
10,000$300.00$400.00

If price per image matters more than anything else, both makers have cheaper siblings in the catalogue: OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst list $0.02 at 1K and 2K, and Google's Nano Banana 2 lists $0.03 at 1K and 2K. The Nano Banana Pro vs Nano Banana 2 guide covers the Google side in detail.

Which one for which job

These are starting points from how people use the two models, not benchmark results:

Where to start by job

Ad creative with a headline in the pictureGPT Image 2Nano Banana Pro
Product photo edits that must keep the product exactNano Banana ProGPT Image 2
Combining many references (characters, products, a setting)GPT Image 2 (16 inputs)Nano Banana Pro (14 inputs)

A useful habit is to keep the prompt and references in your own code and treat the model as a setting. When one model struggles with a specific prompt, send the same body to the other instead of rewriting the prompt for an hour.

Run the same prompt on both

This sample submits one prompt to GPT Image 2. Change model to nano-banana-pro to run it on Google's model; nothing else changes. Each 4K image costs $0.03 on GPT Image 2 and $0.04 on Nano Banana Pro.

Compare both models in one script

Submitting both jobs at once and polling them together is the quickest way to judge the two side by side. There is no monthly quota, so a comparison run like this is limited only by your balance.

Python
import os
import time

import requests

API = "https://api.revana.si/v1"
HEADERS = {"Authorization": f"Bearer {os.environ['REVANA_API_KEY']}"}
PROMPT = "A paper coffee cup on a cafe table. The sleeve reads KEEP GOING in hand-lettered type."

jobs = {}
for model in ("gpt-image-2", "nano-banana-pro"):
    r = requests.post(f"{API}/generations", headers=HEADERS, json={
        "model": model,
        "input": {"prompt": PROMPT, "resolution": "2K", "aspect_ratio": "1:1"},
        "max_cost_usd": 0.1,
    })
    r.raise_for_status()
    jobs[model] = r.json()["id"]

for model, gen_id in jobs.items():
    while True:
        job = requests.get(f"{API}/generations/{gen_id}", headers=HEADERS).json()
        if job["status"] in ("succeeded", "failed"):
            break
        time.sleep(3)
    print(model, job["status"], job.get("output"), job.get("cost_usd"))

Both models refuse some prompts, for example a real person's likeness or a trademarked character. A refusal comes back as a failed job with error.code content_policy and a reason, and it is not charged.

Browse both on the models page, read the request reference in the docs, compare credit packs on the pricing page, or get an API key.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPT Image 2 better than Nano Banana Pro?

Neither wins every job. GPT Image 2 takes more reference images (16) and a 5:2 panorama; Nano Banana Pro is known for accurate text and faithful edits and offers 4:5 and 5:4. Run your own prompts through both; on Revana only the model field changes.

Which is cheaper, GPT Image 2 or Nano Banana Pro?

In October 2026, GPT Image 2 costs $0.03 per image and Nano Banana Pro costs $0.04 per image, each the same at 1K, 2K and 4K.

Can I use both with one API key?

Yes. Both are in the same catalogue and take the same request body. Change the model field from gpt-image-2 to nano-banana-pro to switch.

Do both models support 4K?

Yes. Both list 1K, 2K and 4K, and both charge the same at every size.

How many reference images can I send?

Up to 16 for GPT Image 2 and up to 14 for Nano Banana Pro, in the image_urls field.
